The Section Ad Hoc Committee for the Christian Sector has become aware of the media invitation titled “The State of the Church in South Africa,” scheduled for 15 January 2026 at 11h00 – Birchwood Hotel, Boksburg.

The Committee wishes to inform the public and the media that the press conference convened by the Committee’s former Chairperson, Rev. Professor Musa Xulu, is not an official activity of the Committee and does not represent the collective views, position, or mandate of the Committee. Furthermore, the invitation to the media briefing was circulated without the Committee members’ knowledge, consultation, or endorsement.

Prof. Xulu submitted a letter of resignation as Chairperson of the Committee on 15 January 2026, just moments before his press conference. Prior to this, the CRL Rights Commission had formally written to him on 14 January 2026, directing him to desist from any media engagements, as he lacked the authority to convene such a briefing.

The Committee wishes to state unequivocally:

  1. No Mandate or Authority was given: The scheduled briefing was organised unilaterally by Professor Xulu in his personal capacity. The Committee was neither consulted nor authorised for this engagement.
  2. Views Expressed are Personal: Any statements made or positions presented at this briefing reflect Professor Xulu’s personal opinions and must not be construed as representing the official stance of the Section 22 Ad Hoc Committee or the broader CRL Rights Commission process.
  3. Committee Remains Focused on its Mandate: The Section 22 Committee continues its work in accordance with its Terms of Reference. On 19 December 2025, the Committee held an official media briefing to launch the Draft Self-Regulatory Framework for the Christian Sector for public consultation. This inclusive, transparent process remains our sole official focus. This committee is committed to developing a collaborative, constitutionally sound framework through nationwide dialogue.

The Committee regrets any confusion or misrepresentation this unauthorised briefing may cause. The committee reaffirms its commitment to working with all structures and will communicate all official updates through proper channels and as a united body.

Issued by the Members of the Section 22 Ad Hoc Committee for the Christian Sector (On behalf of the Committee, excluding Prof. Musa Xulu)
